Wine Down Wednesday

May 4, 2008 by vegasrenie

Okay, so I’m a little late in reporting this, but that’s okay. Sunny 106.5 had its spring season of Wine Down Wednesday events at the Casino MonteLago in Lake Las Vegas, and I made the long trek there in spite of living at the other end of the world. That would be Northwest Las Vegas for those of you unfamiliar with the area.

Sunny 106.5 FM is Las Vegas’ “Adult Contemporary” radio station with probably the best on-air personalities in town. Two of my favorites were there last Wednesday, Tom Chase - late morning and the station GM - and Michael Neal, the early morning guy who is a great foil to Melanie. I *really* like Melanie because I share her single-woman angst. But you’d have to listen to understand!

Enjoy the Slideshow!  Wine Down Wednesday Returns!

Traveling to the MonteLago Casino is a little bit of a trip as it is located about 20 miles from the Las Vegas Strip. It’s part of the MonteLago Village Resort which is on the shores of Lake Las Vegas, and is a Mediterranean-themed “village” shopping, dining, golfing, and homes. Very pretty. But I digress.

The Tappo Lounge, or “Tappo’s” as the sign indicates, is a two-level bar/pub with great food, an amazing wine collection, and considerable ambiance. While the outdoor patio may have been a little cozy, the two levels inside made room for all.

The wines were from Fetzer: the 2006 Valley Oaks Gewürztraminer and the 2005 Valley Oaks Cabernet Sauvignon. Both were very drinkable, but my favorite was the Gerwurtz. It was on the dry side of sweet and quite refreshing.

There were hand-passed appetizers as well as an appetizer table. The hand-passed appetizers were trays of quiches and trays of smoked salmon with dill sauce on cucumber rounds.

I met a wonderful couple, Boris and Liz Raiman, who, when they heard about the upcoming winery cruises to Mexico, told me that they lived on a boat in Mazatlan in the earlier days of their 40+ year marriage. They also lived in La Paz, and told me that the Santa Rosalina church there was built by Eiffel (yes, the same one), and it was transported to Mexico. What a story!

The only bad part about the evening was the dreaded drive home, which really wasn’t too bad. Since I had arrived early, I received a nice Sunny 106.5 stemmed glass. Those who arrived late (6:15 was late) got a plastic glass.

While this was diametrically different from the events at the Stratosphere last winter, this still showed one of the reasons why so many of us live here. Open and inviting, the event, the Village, the Casino, and most of all, the wonderful folks from Sunny and Tappo’s made it a warm and wonderful evening.

Stay tuned on the KSNE website for more upcoming Wine Down Wednesdays!
