Software Malfunction - Part 2
July 23, 2008 by vegasrenie

Computer systems truly ducked up!
After nearly three whole days of being completely invisible, Vegas Wineaux is back online. Still somewhat fractured, but no longer completely broken! It will be back to its usual beautiful self very soon, I promise.
For those of you who may be technically inclined, here is a synopsis of what happened.
Every blog in the world is run on some sort of platform – an “engine” if you will – that performs very basic functions that allows bloggers to manage their blogs. My particular platform of choice is WordPress. I used to have Blogger (Blogspot) as my platform but wanted more flexibility in customizing my own designs and activating certain features. I also wanted to get away from the “Blog” look and have a site that was user friendly and offered a lot of reading, website-like features, better look and feel, and user interactivity. WordPress allowed me to do that, and since I’m a technical person, the hand-coding that had to be done in order to achieve my goals was only slightly daunting.
While I have had problems from time to time (as does everybody who has anything to do with computers) it wasn’t until WordPress upgraded its engine (that’s the platform) two weeks ago that disaster struck. You can still see the results of some of the problems. For example, I’ve suffered the loss of my banner display and some other important icons. However, this particular problem was not limited to me; hundreds of bloggers all over the world reported many of the same problems that I had encountered, and many of those problems simply were not solvable. And some were far worse than mine.
After nearly a week and a half of hassling with these issues, Vegas Wineaux is almost back to full functionality.Of course there have been repercussions. I was in the top 200 of the Blogtoplist and the Best Wine Websites; I have seen some of my ratings slide into the 800s. Can’t be rated if you can’t be seen! However, I expect to regain those losses in short order.
Interestingly, MirePoix Vegas was unaffected by the platform upgrade and continued to run smoothly. That was the mystery with the problems – the capricious and fickle nature of the disasters couldn’t be pinpointed. There was one person, for instance, who upgraded eight blogs. Two had problems, and the other six were just fine. They were all identical in host, server, software versions, etc. Once again, it just made no sense.
On the bragging end, my newest trackers on both of the sites show where my readers are based, and I’m happy to report that every continent is represented on the sites. Okay. So maybe not Antarctica. Damned penguins. With the numbers generated from the current Vegas Wineaux, MirePoix Vegas, and the old sites, our numbers have reached well over 12,000, the majority of which have been registered in just the last couple of months. The old website and blog have not been active for nearly five months, and it took a year and a half to garner the numbers that the new sites have done in just weeks.
Thanks again for your ongoing patience and support as your Vegas Wineaux/Webmaster/Writer/Chief Cook & Bottle Washer carries on.
Whew.

Hello there - I found your site from reading the Wordpress site.
I can certainly understand how you felt as my main blog was fine after upgrading to Wordpress 2.6, however 3 of my other smaller sites are having this problem with images not showing up.
I was wondering if you possibly explain how you managed to fix this problem please?
Many thanks,
Simon
